Reframing Yoga for ADHD: Rosie Turner and ADHD Untangled

Read time 5 mins

My name is Rosie Turner and I am the creator of ADHD Untangled. My aim is to change the lives of those dealing with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

I am an experienced yoga teacher and fully qualified ADHD coach. Through my work, I create a holistic path to wellbeing and personal success.

The Journey of Rosie Turner

My journey into the world of yoga and coaching was deeply personal. As someone with ADHD, I have experienced firsthand the struggles and frustrations that come with the condition. Traditional methods of managing ADHD often fell short, leaving me searching for more effective and holistic solutions. This quest led me to yoga, where I discovered a sanctuary of peace and a powerful tool for managing ADHD symptoms.

Yoga not only helped me manage my ADHD but also open new avenues of self-awareness and personal growth. Inspired by this transformation, I decided to become a certified yoga instructor and later a coach. It is a huge privilege to be able to help others navigate their ADHD journey.

The Birth of ADHD Untangled

ADHD Untangled was born out of a desire to provide a comprehensive support system for individuals with ADHD. I recognised that many people with ADHD felt misunderstood and underserved by conventional methods.

My vision was to create a space where individuals could explore their potential, manage their symptoms, and thrive in their personal and professional lives.

ADHD Untangled offers coaching services tailored specifically for individuals with ADHD. The program is designed to address the physical, mental, and emotional aspects of the condition, providing a holistic approach to wellness.

I also offer yoga teacher training that enables instructors to tailor their classes to the needs of those with ADHD.

Yoga for ADHD

Practicing yoga offers many mental health benefits – strength, discipline, and a connection to the body and breath. My approach to teaching yoga is specifically targeted to those with ADHD. There are key ways in which I try to ensure my classes make individuals feel motivated and comfortable.

Visual Cues

Many people with ADHD respond to visual stimuli more than audio. They can also struggle to remember a complex set of instructions and yoga poses. I always make sure to show, rather than describe movements to my students. This way they can be clear and confident in what they are doing.

Challenge and Progression

ADHD brains relish a challenge. I recognise the importance of making those in my class feel like they are making a real achievement with their yoga practice.

Some teachers choose to use a different set of movements in each class. This means there is no benchmark to measure progress. By creating a challenging flow where students can see improvement each time, my classes keep people motivated and determined to improve.

Positive Language

Many of those with ADHD experience Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). This can be triggered by a yoga teacher repeatedly correcting their work, especially in front of other classmates.

I have been careful to reframe the language used when teaching. Instead of critiquing an individual’s technique, I start from a place of positivity, focusing on what they are doing well.

A person with ADHD will quickly become disengaged when something isn’t interesting to them. Whilst my classes still require the discipline of a traditional yoga class, I have never been afraid to modernise my teaching.

One example is the ‘yoga brunch’ I used to run. Here, classes would be accompanied by ‘club classics’ and followed by food and drinks. This created a fun, lively environment for all levels of ability.

Coaching with Compassion

In addition to yoga, I provide one-on-one coaching sessions that are bespoke to the individual. My coaching philosophy is rooted in compassion and understanding, drawing on my own experiences and extensive training. I help clients set realistic goals, develop effective strategies, and build the skills needed to manage their ADHD symptoms.

My coaching sessions often focus on areas related to executive function such as time management, organisation, and emotional regulation. I use a non-judgmental approach and aim to create a safe space for them to explore their challenges and celebrate their successes.

Community and Connection

One of the most powerful aspects of ADHD Untangled is the sense of community it fosters. I understand from personal experience that ADHD can often lead to feelings of isolation and misunderstanding. To combat this, I have created a supportive community where individuals can connect, share their experiences, and learn from one another.

Through workshops, group classes, and online forums, ADHD Untangled provides a platform for individuals to find solidarity and support. This sense of community is invaluable, offering a reminder that no one has to navigate their ADHD journey alone.

Success Stories

I am always incredibly moved by the success stories of my clients. It is amazing that my coaching helps them not only to manage their ADHD symptoms, but to pursue their dreams with confidence.

For instance, one client shared how coaching helped them develop a structured routine, which helped to significantly improve their ADHD symptoms, productivity and reduced their anxiety.

Another client found that the mindfulness practices they learned in yoga classes helped them stay focused and calm during stressful situations.

Looking Ahead

As ADHD Untangled continues to grow, I am committed to helping more individuals with ADHD live fulfilling and empowered lives. I am always exploring new ways to enhance her services and reach more people, including developing online programs and delivering coaching across the world, for example running a retreat in Bali.

I truly believe that with the right support and tools, individuals with ADHD can access their full potential and lead a life of purpose and joy.

For me, ADHD Untangled is more than just a business; it is a lifeline for many individuals with ADHD. Through compassionate coaching and transformative yoga practices, I hope to help more people untangle the complexities of ADHD and discover their true potential.
